The year was 1993, and something profoundly unique occurred in South East Australia.

A baby named Tomm Tennent came into the world with a condition that defied all expectations.

Ultrasounds had already hinted at the extraordinary nature of his condition

prompting his parents to grapple with a crucial decision.

Thankfully, Tomm’s father made a decision that changed the course of their lives. “We had a conversation, and we decided to embrace whatever destiny had in store for us,” his father, Geoff Tennent, revealed.

No amount of medical tests or examinations could have prepared anyone for the severity of Tomm’s condition. When his parents laid eyes on him for the first time in the delivery room, their astonishment knew no bounds. Tomm’s mother, Debbie Tennent, couldn’t believe her eyes when they placed him on her chest.

“My heart skipped a beat, but at the same time, it was a stunning moment to hold him close,” she recalled. The doctors were baffled by Tomm’s condition.

With the cause remaining unclear, treatment options were virtually non-existent. Their hope was that as Tomm grew older, his skin would naturally adapt, and the pronounced wrinkles would subside.

He spent about two and a half months in the hospital, a trying period for both him and the medical researchers. They eventually discovered that Tomm had an excess of Hyaluronic acid in his body, akin to the condition seen in Shar Pei puppies. However, Tomm’s levels of this substance were significantly higher than typical. Intriguingly, as Shar Peis mature, their levels of Hyaluronic acid decrease, leading to changes in their skin. The medical experts believed the same might happen to Tomm.

Dr. Andrew Ramsden, a physician, predicted that Tomm’s condition would likely improve with age. And he was right! Tomm’s condition did indeed progress over time, in line with the doctor’s prognosis.

Tomm encountered challenges during his early years, facing teasing and exclusion from school due to his distinct appearance. While he still bore some minor physical differences, they were far less pronounced compared to his birth.

Three decades have passed since Tomm’s remarkable birth, leaving doctors astounded. Despite limited social media presence, it seems Tomm is happily married to Hannah in Frankston, Victoria, Australia. “Life’s about making choices and moving forward,” Tomm shared on his Facebook profile.
